3rd Tennessee Cavalry U.S. and was imprisoned at Cahaba Prison in Alabama. He was on the
which exploded and burned on the Mississippi River resulting in the worst maritime
in U.S. history.
My great-grandfather, Gilbert Harrision Tipton, was a
member of the 5th Tennessee Infantry, U.S.V..
I authored a book on this regiment which was
published in 1995 entitled "Volunteers for Union and Liberty:
the 5th Tennessee Infantry, U.S.A., 1862-1865."
